How long is the ad posted and are they effective.

Its on a per click basis.

They will display your ads to multiple people - but you don't have to pay for it unless someone clicks and visits your website.

If they display your ads to 1000 people but only 2 end up clicking then your

Click Through Rate is = 2/1000 or 0.02%

If you click through rate is lower than 1%, then they may tell you change or remove your ad.

Ads cost by Keywords:
Each keyword has a cent value.
It start from 2 cents/click.
Depending on the key word demand it may be as much as $5 per click! And yes there are websites that pay that much!!

In my experience,
Google is cheaper and more competitive
Yahoo (Overture) is olders, not so cheap, BUT less competitive.

However,
Google is easy to get out of if you don't want to continue. Overture is little bit harder to get out of - they will charge before you know it.
